It was the summer of 1959 when Roman Catholic Priest Reinard Beaver headed east from Spokane, WA to New York City with 3 Gonzaga University Men's Glee Club members Chad Mitchell, Mike Kobluk and Mike Pugh, with hopes of a promising folk music career. The following summer, Mike Pugh left the group and was replaced by Joe Frazier. They went on to become one of the most popular folk groups of the 60s, delighting audiences with a wide variety of music. But they quickly became know for their biting social and political satire with such songs as "The John Birch Society", "Barry's Boys" and "Alma Mater". They were the first to record "The Marvelous Toy", "The First Time Ever", "You Were on My Mind" and "Blowing In the Wind". Chad Mitchell left the group in 1965 and was replace by John Denver, who was with them until 1968. They appeared on college campuses and at major concert halls across the country including Carnegie Hall (3 times). They went on to appear on every major television variety show, including the Bell Telephone Hour, Johnny Carson's Tonight Show, the Steve Allen Show, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Hootenany and the Ed Sullivan Show. After not performing at all for over 20 years, Chad, Mike and Joe reunited for the first time at the WMFA Tribute to Dick Cerri, in January, 1986. Doris Justis, of Side by Side, was instrumental at getting the trio back together for this event, which became the first of 24 WFMA annual concerts. They have returned to help us celebrate our 10th and 20th anniversaries and participated in our tribute to Tom Paxton in May, 2008, so it is only fitting that we have them back to celebrate 50 years of making wonderful music together.
