Lena and Sanford Markley form the nucleus of the popular band which played to standing room only audiences at clubs in Washington, D.C. for nearly 20 years. Lena and Sanford were recently selected to perform as New Folk Finalists at the prestigious Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. The recipient of numerous local and national songwriting awards, Sanford was also honored by the Washington Area Music Association for his solo CD, Common Ground. Both Lena and Sanford have shared the stage with performers including Tom Chapin, Jonathan Edwards, The Kingston Trio, Fred Small, and Garnet Rogers, and their voices graced the Wammie-award winning recording Celebration of a Dreamer, a collection of songs by the late Dave Allen. Captivating audiences with their magical blend and natural tight phrasing of sibling harmonies, Sanford and Lena draw from a wealth of Sanford’s compelling original songs, and their stage presence is truly engaging. Shadows on the Light, their new live recording, reveals Sanford to be a literate and intelligent songwriter. Now, as seasoned performers, they have come full circle, returning to their beginnings as an acoustic duo with a renewed emphasis on original music.
